Palenque ruins and waterfalls excursion
Palenque is in the state of Chiapas approximately 10 hours south of Xalapa. It contains one of the most studied and written about Mayan archaeological sites that are beyond impressive.
On Friday morning we will a enjoy breakfast and relax by the pools side of our hotel in the city of Palenque. After freshening up we visit the Museum of Palenque to view the impressive collection of Mayan artifacts. The group will then have free time to visit downtown Palenque or relax in the Hotel. You are welcome to join the tour guides in the evening for dinner at the Mayabell hotel and restaurant. It has a chill atmosphere and eclectic menu. They usually have evening entertainment and handmade jewelry for sale.
On Saturday morning we will meet in the hotel lobby after breakfast at 8am. We will start off for the Archaeological site of Palenque by private shuttle. The site has more than 200 structures, beautiful sculptures and inscriptions dating back to the Classic period (400-700 AD). Because the ruins are in the heart of the jungle it has a real “lost city” feel. Howling Monkeys and a variety of tropical birds are abundant in the surrounding jungle.
We will then head for Misol-Ha waterfall (Streaming Water) It is located in the “Chol” tribe area of Chiapas where we may see some wildlife. It is a (120 foot) fall surrounded by lush vegetation. It creates one of the state’s most wonderful natural sights. It is a great place for photography.
We will continue our journey to the rain forest location of Agua Azul waterfall (Blue Water). It is a series of cascades and fast flowing waters rolling down a limestone ridge to form small pools. The limestone bed causes a phenomenon that gives the waters an eye dazzling turquoise effect. We will have time to swim, take photos and explore.
We head back to our hotel in the evening. Participants will have free time to enjoy the hotel or visit downtown.
Sunday morning we will check out of our hotel and head for home.
