Volunteer programs ISA Xalapa 2009
Xalapa is a city that offers an incredible amount of free cultural activities and it has a good number of volunteer programs
ISA Xalapa offers these volunteer programs:
- House “Matraca” for street kids
- “Mariana Sayago” Asylum
- “Vida Milenaria” Turtles (May-Jun and Aug- Oct)
This is a nonprofit able nongovernmental association that helps kids that work/live on the streets.
We had worked with them for over one year.
We usually work in 2 of their 4 programs:
1.-Programa del Niño en Situación de Calle, que cuenta con tres vertientes educativas:
Casa Matraca, Club Matraca y Trabajo en Calle.
Teaching Spanish/English to kids in a small class room
4.-Programa de Incidencia en Políticas Públicas, Medios de Comunicación e Investigación: Área de Investigación, de Comunicación Social y Políticas Públicas.
Helping them with publicity and obtaining resources.
We also had helped the “Mariana Sayago” asylum.
Here the students could either help with the health care of senior citizens or they can help with their social happiness: reading books, playing bingo etc…
This is of an article that an ISA student bring to the office, she found it on the news paper
It´s about Don Samy a senior citizen that was waiting for his family to visit him:
Don Samy, como le llaman cariñosamente en el asilo, resaltó que no perdía la esperanza de que su hijo Luis Alberto, su nuera Erika y su nieta Erikita, lo visitaran, aunque sea en el último día del año.
“Aquí estoy, esperándolos; ellos viven en el puerto, mi hijo es administrador, pero no creo que venga… miro hacia la puerta a ver si lo veo llegar. Ya me bañé, ya me puse este traje elegante para que me vean guapo”.
We work with Vida milenaria ecological group by saving and preserving the life of the lore turtles in the Gulf of Mexico this is just a 6 day program that depends on the turtles.
On summer the students will help the turtles laying their eggs and help the “Vida Milenaria” group by signaling the nest and counting the number of eggs.
On fall the students will aid them on taking care of the baby turtles as they break off their eggs.
This program is short and really hard because the participants need to be on the beach a long time. So far we had only done this one time and it was a wonderful experience but we were only 3 persons on this project and one of them was a biologist.
